What are the mood symptoms of schizoaffective disorder?

Patients with the depressive subtype of schizoaffective disorder exclusively experience depressive episodes, which include:

  • Depressed mood: feeling sad or empty, tearful
  • Being less interested in most or all activities
  • Weight loss
  • Sleeping too little or too much
  • Physical restlessness or tiredness
  • Fatigue, loss of energy
  • Feeling worthless or very guilty
  • Being less able to concentrate or make decisions

Patients with the bipolar subtype of schizoaffective disorder experience manic or mixed episodes (and may or may not also experience depressive episodes), which include:

  • Unusually high, grandiose, or irritable mood
  • Inflated self-esteem
  • Decreased need for sleep
  • Being more talkative than usual
  • Racing thoughts and ideas
  • Being easily distracted
  • Increased goal-oriented activity
  • Risky behavior

Mixed episodes include:

  • Both manic and depressive symptoms being experienced nearly every day
