What is schizophrenia?

According to the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders, 5th edition, schizophrenia is a serious mental illness. It impairs a person’s thinking and judgment. It also impairs how a person relates to others. People with this illness may also find it hard to make decisions and manage their emotions.

As a result, people with schizophrenia may react inappropriately. They can feel frightened, nervous, and confused. Their perceptions of reality may be different from those of people around them.
